Each player is dealt five cards, face up. The highest card of the five cards gives the hand a value. In the event of a tie, the high card breaks the tie. Depending on the game, the cards are ranked in order of rank, from Ace to Ace.
Pairs are two cards of equal rank. If the two pairs are equal in rank, the second highest odd card breaks the tie. The higher pair is usually the better hand.
Flush is five cards of the same suit. The straight flush is the best natural hand. The straight flush starts with the highest value card. The player who makes the best straight wins.
Fours of a kind is a combination of four cards of the same rank. In some parts of the world, this hand is called a quad. This hand is not possible in standard poker.
Three of a kind is three cards of the same rank. If the three of a kind is matched, the hand wins. If there is no matching three of a kind, the highest card wins. The highest card wins when more than one player has a five of a kind.
Jacks beat tens. A deuce is a wild card. It can be used as an additional card to supplement a hand. A joker counts as a fifth card in certain special hands.
