it’s from shakepears play King Lear. “gilded butterflies” means something that appears beautiful, trustworthy, good on the outside, but is really deceptive and untrusworthy and bad on the inside. In the play, this phrase is used to describe the kings daughters who decieve him for his gold.

It can also be seen as a comment on trying to make something that is already beautiful, more beautiful and in the process rendering it useless; a gilded (gold plated) butterfly would not be able to fly.

This is a great design for a tattoo! Statement designs are not so often used by most enthusiasts however there are those who do for a variety of reasons. Thanks for sharing.
